September 2024 outreach: HIV prevention, hygiene and food security
The women’s and youth coordinators and our HIV testing provider visited support groups to talk about HIV transmission, the ABC of prevention and hygiene.
In September 2024, MASYAP’s Women’s and Youth Coordinators and our HIV testing provider visited a number of women’s and youth support groups. The sessions focused on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, and on hygiene.
How HIV spreads
HIV destroys CD4 cells, which the body needs to fight disease. It is passed on through:
- unprotected sex
- sharing needles, syringes or other injecting equipment
- from mother to child during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding
The ABC of prevention
- Abstinence
- Being faithful
- Condom use
Hygiene and food security
Good hygiene was discussed as key to preventing disease, and members were encouraged to build it into their daily routines.
The Women’s Coordinator also stressed the importance of food security, saying that “food security is a crucial determinant of whether people can lead an active and healthy life, as it directly impacts access to the nutrients needed for well-being.”
