Kicking AIDS Out: how netball helps prevent HIV
MASYAP uses netball and other sport to engage girls, share HIV/AIDS information and challenge stigma.

At MASYAP we believe in the power of sport to change lives. Our Kicking AIDS Out approach uses sport to educate young people about HIV/AIDS and help prevent it.
Why sport works
- It engages young people: a netball match or a relay race captures girls’ attention and enthusiasm.
- It is built around them: activities are designed to suit participants’ skills and interests.
What it achieves
- Protective attitudes: we focus on girls and young women, giving them knowledge about HIV and the confidence to protect themselves.
- Less stigma: as players learn about HIV, they challenge stereotypes and become more understanding.
- New roles: players become advocates who spread awareness, correct myths and encourage testing, and some go on to care for people living with HIV.
Why netball
Netball is fast, team-based and hugely popular with girls in Malawi. We use matches, half-time and practice sessions to talk about HIV/AIDS, and the game itself encourages fitness, teamwork and discipline.
